Hurtigruten – The Norwegian Cruise

Written by sailor2512 on March 15th, 2011

This cruise up the Norwegian Coast is one of the most beautiful trips I have ever taken. The cruise starts in the picturesque little town of Bergen. Imagine wooden houses in all colours of the rainbow scattered around the blue water of a deep fiord. That is Bergen. But it gets better as the cruise starts and moves up the coast, going into gorgeous fiords like the Geiranger fiord where steep cliffs rise to both sides and it seems impossible for a big ship to navigate. The landscape becomes more rugged and houses are scarce the further north you get. Tromsoe is the last large harbour, after that it is just nature, harsh and almost untouched. You can get off at the North Cape and fight your way against the wind to the monument and then say you have been at the northernmost tip of Europe. The trip continues to Kirkenes close to Finland. You can take a traditional mail boat on a Hurtigruten ship or book a more comfortable cruise ship with all amenities. I loved it because it is so clean, the colours of the landscape are bright and clear and you can almost feel as if you were alone in the world.
