Adelaide, South Australia – City Trip

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

I recently spent a week in Adelaide. There is so much to do that I actually ran out of time in the end! Of course there is the city centre with its endless variety of excellent restaurants, the central market with food from all over the world, and the pedestrian zone with all the nice shops and cafés. It’s easy to get around with a free bus circling the city. There are lots of art galleries and museums such as the  South Australian Museum with its first class Aborigine exhibition. From the shopping mall you can wander past colonial buildings and the University to the Auckland Zoo where you can see the only panda bears in the Southern Hemisphere! The zoo alone is a place to spend a whole day, really. Click to continue »

Kangaroo Island, Adelaide, South Australia – Visit!

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

A  few weeks ago I was in Adelaide and went to Kangaroo Island on a 3-day tour. Had an awesome time there. You can see kangaroos everywhere, of course. But not only that.  Driving around I saw koalas hanging in the trees, seals on the beach, and echidnas along the road – and they are so cute! The Remarkable Rocks are incredibly beautiful, with the red rock formations contrasting against the deep blue sea. Amazing history there, too, with the first settlers cut off from the mainland for months and being supplied over hundreds of steep steps up the cliff. Of course there is excellent hiking there in the Flinders Chase N.P.

I stayed in the Hotel Aurora Ozone in Kingscote, nice little hotel on the ocean front. Also recommendable is the K.I. Wilderness Retreat – comfort in the middle of nowhere. The most amazing hotel I have ever seen in my life however is the Southern Ocean Lodge – incredible location, tastefully done, worldclass views, amazing food. Pure luxury right in the wilderness with wildlife at your doorstep.
