Hiking in Patagonia – Chile – Argentina

Written by sailor2512 on February 14th, 2011

One of the most beautiful hiking I have ever done was in Patagonia. You fly into Santiago, Chile and from there you can fly on to Punta Arenas and take a bus to Torres del Paine. If you are adventurous you can also take a luxury bus from Santiago past the stunning volcanoes to Puerto Montt, one very lovely coastal town at the end of the Panamericana. From there take a boat down to Punta Arenas through the fiords and brave the waves. In Punta Arenas don’t forget to watch the cute little Magellan penguins hurrying from the beach into the water.

Everything is just very pretty until you reach Torres del Paine. The scenery there is just breathtaking. You have never seen such sheer black cliff faces! Hike from the visitor center to Lago del Grey and watch the glaciers calve. What an awesome sight! You can do a 5-6 day hike around the whole mountain, using a guide or doing it on your own.

The air is crisp and the colors so clear for lack of pollution. It’s truly amazing and one of my favourite places in the whole world!
