Volvo Ocean Race Fleet arrives in Auckland – Groupama 1st

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

source volvooceanrace The French team rallied in eight metre seas and 30 knot headwinds to isolate the leak and drain 1.5 tonnes of water before crossing the finish line at 10:33:47 UTC/23:33:47 local, more than 80 nautical miles ahead of their nearest competitor.

Skipper Franck Cammas was thrilled with the win and becoming the first French team to take line honours in a Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race finish into Auckland, although 33 Export did win on handicap back in 1977-78.

“It’s a great day for Groupama 4 and it’s a great to arrive here first into Auckland,” Cammas said. Click to continue »

Hurtigruten – The Norwegian Cruise

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

HURTIGRUTEN - ROUTE MAP

This cruise up the Norwegian Coast is one of the most beautiful trips I have ever taken. The cruise starts in the picturesque little town of Bergen. Imagine wooden houses in all colours of the rainbow scattered around the blue water of a deep fiord. That is Bergen. But it gets better as the cruise starts and moves up the coast, going into gorgeous fiords like the Geiranger fiord where steep cliffs rise to both sides Click to continue »

Namibia vacation – Desert Adventure – Etosha Wildlife

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

If you have a flight to Southern Africa, anywhere like Johannesburg or Cape Town, or even Windhoek, consider taking a week or so to explore Namibia. Windhoek is an interesting city with its European flair and German place names. From there you can take a rental car or guided tour to Etosha National Park Click to continue »

Galapagos Cruise – Untouched Wildlife Encounters

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

If you have not been to Galapagos you should hurry to make it there. Who knows how long it will still be preserved in the state it is in now. Take a cruise between the islands and emerge into a past where animals were not afraid of humans. It is truly amazing. You step off your cruise ship and all of a sudden you are in a whole different world. Click to continue »

Etosha Park in Namibia – Wildlife Safari and Adventure

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

If you have a week or so and want to really experience Africa you should consider Namibia. I once spent only one week there but it felt like a lot longer because I filled this week with so many exciting activities. You fly into Windhoek and take a rental car if you want to be independent. Of course you can take a guided tour like a safari tour as well. The most important place to see would be Etosha National Park. Click to continue »

National parks in Costa Rica

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

Costa Rica is a must-do for any nature lover. There are numerous national parks in the small country and they are organized a bit like the national parks in the US. There are rangers and maps and hiking trails through the jungle or up volcanoes, and you can actually feel quite safe. Especially if you are interested in birds Click to continue »

Hiking in Patagonia – Chile – Argentina

Monday, February 14th, 2011

One of the most beautiful hiking I have ever done was in Patagonia. You fly into Santiago, Chile and from there you can fly on to Punta Arenas and take a bus to Torres del Paine. If you are adventurous you can also take a luxury bus from Santiago past the stunning volcanoes to Puerto Montt, one very lovely coastal town at the end of the Panamericana. From there take a boat down to Punta Arenas through the fiords and brave the waves. In Punta Arenas don’t forget to watch the cute little Magellan penguins hurrying from Click to continue »

Seine river cruise – Paris, France

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

If you fly to Europe why not consider going to Paris and enjoying this exciting city. Lots to see and do – but another wonderful way of seeing France is going by riverboat from Paris to Honfleur on the river Seine. You board in Paris, then slowly make your way down the river through beautiful Normandy with its romantic landscapes, passing old abbies and monasteries and typical small French villages. One of the highlights is the garden of Claude Monet, where he painted his famous waterlilies. Honfleur is on the coast opposite from England, a cute fishing village with French flair. The cruise takes one week and the food on the cruise ship is fabulous. Great way to see a different part of France a little bit off the beaten track.

Skiing in Utah – Powder Packages Airfares Hotels Car Rentals Ski Passes

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Utah is the place to be. There is so much so see. When you fly into Salt Lake City you can already see its exceptional location. There are mountains everywhere. Go to Salt Lake City in the summer and you will love its dry heat and the pleasant climate in the mountains all around. But get a rental car and drive out to Park City or to Alta and you will get a whole new perspective on the joys of skiing. The air is very dry – after all you are in a desert. That means that the snow is dry, too. Imagine powder wherever you go. Virgin slopes covered in powder snow, blue sky and very few skiers, that’s Utah. I was amazed at the easy Click to continue »

Moscow – St. Petersburg River cruise

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

If you ever wanted to see Russia on your next holiday in Europe, one great way to really see the country is a river cruise. I took a cruise once from Moscow over the Volga river all the way to St. Petersburg, the former Leningrad. Moscow in itself is worth a visit, with the Red Square and the Basilika and all the beautiful monasteries and museums. Then you board a cruise ship and go along the Volga canal and on the Volga river. You pass sleepy villages, see Russia the way it really is, with friendly people, laid back and so traditional still. You pass huge lakes that seem like oceans like Lake Ladoga, and after a few days you reach St. Petersburg. On the cruise package deals you usually stay in each city for a day or two to see the sights. Don’t miss the Hermitage – spend at least a few hours or a day to see just a little part of it. In the Peter-and-Paul cathedral you will see tombs of old tsars and feel the history of Katharina the Great and all the great tsars that formed Russian history.
A cruise is just such a  great way to see a different part of Russia and get an indepth feeling for this interesting country.

Fiji Likuliku Lagoon Resort

Monday, January 24th, 2011

If you want pure luxury – this is it. A resort to die for. All bures are absolutely awesome. The overwater bungalows are just amazing. You sit in your lounge and have glass underneath to see the blue water, or you lie in your tub and look out over the ocean. Wonderfully furnished, just heaven. Looked at the garden and beachfront bures, too, and found them just as nice. Stylish design with lots of wood and elegant fabrics, outdoor shower and beautiful tropical gardens. No phone or TV, I liked that. Who would want to watch TV when the views are so incredible?

The food was fantastic, too. And the fruit smoothies as welcome drinks were just delicious. This is to indulge in pure luxury, I never wanted to leave again. Snorkeling is okay, and it is a very sheltered bay so swimming is great.

Not too far from Denarau or Nadi either, just 2 hours to paradise. This place is truly special, wish I could return tomorrow. A honeymoon here would be the best I could imagine. Getting married on the beach, indulging in pure luxury, pampered by friendly Fijians, sipping champagne on your deck,  could life be any better?

Fiji Malolo Island Beach Resort, Mamanucas

Monday, January 24th, 2011

This is a truly Fijian experience: a resort on a beautiful white beach, turquoise-coloured water, coral reefs and coconut palm trees lining the beach. The bures are tastefully furnished in beautiful Fijian style, so that when you enter your bure you immediately feel at home and never want to leave again. This is real paradise. You can snorkel or go canoeing or sailing, or you just hang out on the beach and enjoy. Loved the restaurant up in the jungle and also the kids’ area. Reminded me of Tarzan and Jane and what an adventurous place for the kids. The service is good and the women are so great with the little ones, too. Not too far from Denarau, only about 2 hours on the ferry, and it is an awesome ride through the Mamanuca islands.

Fiji Mana Island Beach Resort

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Spent a night on Mana Island on an island hopper cruise.  Mana Island is very easy to reach from Denarau by ferry. Just a short ride and you are on Mana. The bures are quite nice and have some privacy. There are island bures and oceanfront. Nice outdoor showers. The food was very good and you can sit outside in the mild evenings and watch out over the water. The snorkeling was okay though it is tidal and you have to watch out for the sharp corals. Beautiful colorful fish everywhere and you can snorkel on both sides of the island. I also went up on a short walk onto the little hill from where you have nice views around all of Mana. Very beautiful wedding chapel with white beach in front and tropical surroundings. What a place to get married and spend your honeymoon. If you have a larger group it is well catered for and absolutely private. There is an airstrip so no problem to fly there if you are short of time. All in all very nice place and clear water to snorkel in.

Adelaide, South Australia – City Trip

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

I recently spent a week in Adelaide. There is so much to do that I actually ran out of time in the end! Of course there is the city centre with its endless variety of excellent restaurants, the central market with food from all over the world, and the pedestrian zone with all the nice shops and cafés. It’s easy to get around with a free bus circling the city. There are lots of art galleries and museums such as the  South Australian Museum with its first class Aborigine exhibition. From the shopping mall you can wander past colonial buildings and the University to the Auckland Zoo where you can see the only panda bears in the Southern Hemisphere! The zoo alone is a place to spend a whole day, really. Click to continue »

Snorkeling at The Blue Lagoon – Fiji, Yasawas

Monday, January 10th, 2011

The Blue Lagoon lies in the Yasawas in Fiji. It is a beautiful place to go snorkeling. The water is very clear and the corals all shine in magnificent colours. There are millions of small but fascinating fish that all have different patterns that tell them apart. When i travelled there, I found so many different and  amazing things. There were always more interesting creatures to find in the calm sea. One of my favouites were a barracuda and some clownfish who were protecting their eggs.  It was really amazing experience and it was one of my favourite holiday places that i will never forget.

Kangaroo Island, Adelaide, South Australia – Visit!

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

A  few weeks ago I was in Adelaide and went to Kangaroo Island on a 3-day tour. Had an awesome time there. You can see kangaroos everywhere, of course. But not only that.  Driving around I saw koalas hanging in the trees, seals on the beach, and echidnas along the road – and they are so cute! The Remarkable Rocks are incredibly beautiful, with the red rock formations contrasting against the deep blue sea. Amazing history there, too, with the first settlers cut off from the mainland for months and being supplied over hundreds of steep steps up the cliff. Of course there is excellent hiking there in the Flinders Chase N.P.

I stayed in the Hotel Aurora Ozone in Kingscote, nice little hotel on the ocean front. Also recommendable is the K.I. Wilderness Retreat – comfort in the middle of nowhere. The most amazing hotel I have ever seen in my life however is the Southern Ocean Lodge – incredible location, tastefully done, worldclass views, amazing food. Pure luxury right in the wilderness with wildlife at your doorstep.

Beautiful North Side Surf Beaches – Oahu, Hawaii

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

When we drove around Oahu to see all the sights of the Island we decided to have a quick break at a beach on the north side of Oahu. But once we all got into our swimming suits and went down to the water we found out that this wasn’t going to be a regular swim. The waves there were about 3-4 metres high which was huge for us. We had tons of fun bodysurfing and getting smashed around by the waves which was just an epic experience for me.  But this was not the highest these waves got we found out after. Because in the summer season these waves get to 6-8 metres high and surf competitions take place on beaches in that location. Even though the waves were not as big as they could get in winter. Back when I was there, they were big enough for me. I had so much fun in those waves and I think that it’s definitely a place to visit in Hawaii.
